Found the relevant bits and decided to cut out the beats and hide them in the background. Also identified that Flanger and Phaser effects were distorting the original tracks in a fairly peculiar manner. After collating the tracks in a way that may be telling a story, decided it was too mellow - so went for a distortive burst somewhere in the middle section, and right around the end I found a combo of effects which reminded me of mellotrons...
